Event Details and Rules

Q?

When / Where Does This Event Take Place ?

A.

For almost 20 years, PowersGaming has hosted LAN Parties all over Central and South Texas.  The last seven years' events have been in Austin.   While we love ATX and the awesome BBQ,  Jordan, Jason and Gina Powers were born and raised on the Texas Coast, where seafood is the epitome of "fresh",  the beaches are simply gorgeous, and fishing is the only National Pastime.

So for 2017 we're headed back home...  Back to "Island Time"  where nobody's ever in a hurry.  We hope you'll join us for a LAN "Mini-Vacation" near Rockport TX.  We had Gigabit Internet installed for a 1,000 x 50 pipe (link); perfect for Gaming.

Doors open at High Noon on Friday Dec 08.  Event is over when tournament play is completed on Sunday Dec 10.  Hope to see you on the water !

Q?

What Games Are Played ?

A.

For 2017, we'll host Counter-Strike: Global Offensive as usual, with PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (link) as our headline game, assuming servers are available.  We've recently submitted an application for a Esports Programming Partnership and are awaiting a response.

Teams will consist of five players.  Tournament play is Double Elimination (you must lose twice to be out).

Q?

What About TEAMS ? How Does That Work ?

A.

What we found out years ago, was that allowing 5v5 teams to show up wasn't fair for the lesser experienced teams, and also a guy by himself, or a couple of friends, couldn't come b/c they didn't have a complete team.  So we developed our own formula...  After everyone has registered for the event, we pick Team Captains based on leadership skills and experience.  Team Captains then attend the PG Draft (here) and pick their players from the list of current attendees using a special handicap system we designed (read more in our Blog "How We Create Teams" here).

NOTE:  Our goal is not to create "winning" teams; instead we build teams that provide a pleasurable gaming experience for each player.  If everybody is having fun, and several teams go into overtime, then we've done our job.  This concept brings out the very best in players; all the while teaching good sportsmanship and respect.  As a result, this makes for some seriously even competition.  In the last eight years, we have consistently gone into overtime in one or more games.

IMPORTANT:  You will be picked to play on BOTH a CS:GO and a Battlegrounds (or Rainbow Six) team as described above.  This means you'll need to be at the event ALL DAY Saturday and all day Sunday, until your team finishes.  There are no exceptions

Q?

What Are The Age Restrictions ?

A.

Because we're serving alcohol, all attendees must be 21 or older (on or before Friday Dec 8, 2017) to participate. There are no exceptions; you must present a valid ID at the door.

ColoredBeers

Q?

Can I Bring My Own Alcohol ?

A.

NO OUTSIDE ALCOHOL may be brought onto the premises.  This includes hard liquor (whiskey, tequila, vodka etc.) as well as beer and/or wine.  If there's a certain beer you'd like to see at the event, let us know via the "Contact" tab at the top of this page.

NOTE: You must be 21 years of age on or before Friday Dec 8, 2017 to attend this event.  Proper ID required.

Q?

Are There Any Other Restrictions ?

A.

Yes...  This event is a "Gentleman's Retreat"  held in a private residence on private property and financed by private funds.  As such, we do not allow women to attend.

Q?

Can I Bring My Wife, Girlfriend, Parents, My Kids, Or My Dog ?

A.

Space is limited; also, we're trying to avoid distractions, and concentrate on Gaming. Please leave your wife, girlfriend and your parents at home. There are no pets, and no children allowed in this venue.

Q?

What About Spectators; Can I Come Watch ?

A.

See Above. Spectators are not allowed. There are no exceptions.

Q?

What About Smoking ?

A.

There's NO SMOKING inside the venue; however we do have a well ventilated "Sports Bar" with tables and chairs that can seat the entire LAN party.  There's also an open patio near the BBQ pits for those who love grilling.   NOTE:  While cigars are limited, we do not supply cigarettes at our events.  The freshest cigars in Texas can be found at Serious Cigars in Houston; their online ordering / pricing / shipping is simply the best around.

Q?

What About Drugs, Or Guns ?

A.

We have a strict anti-drug policy...  You'll be picked to play on two separate teams and out of respect for your teammates, you are NOT allowed to take drugs during the event.  Regarding guns...  It's not that we are anti-gun, but LAN parties are obviously not the place.

Q?

Tables/Chairs/Reserved Seating

A.

Each player gets his own 4' table, and all tables have 24" deep shelving for stowing your gear.  We provide cushioned chairs, but if you have a seasoned office remnant that you want to bring, please do so.  Reserved seating is of course available when you sign-up and pay on our secure registration page.

Q?

Where Does Everybody Sleep ?

A.

Our venue is a residential property that is completely emptied out and turned into a "LAN Haven".  Most players typically stay on site to save money, and just out of convenience, plus there are times when tournament overtime takes us into the wee hours of the morning.

Sleep inside near your table, or set up a tent in "Tent City" (our backyard is huge).  Average weather for December can be viewed here.  No matter where you sleep tho, best bet is to bring a sleeping bag, air mattress or foam pad, pillows and blankets.   Washer/Dryer available onsite.

Q?

What About Volunteers ? Do You Need Any Help ?

A.

We've been blessed with an amazing group of volunteers that help with setup year after year, but we can always use additional hands, particularly during the event.  Check out our Blog "Volunteering At The LAN" (here) for more info.  If you're interested in construction, you'll need to contact Jason using the "Contact" tab above.

Q?

How Much Does This Cost ?

A.

We make it simple...  You pay one fee up front, and everything else is free.   All Meals and Appetizers, Beer, T-Shirts, Bawls, Bottled Waters, Sodas and more..  No surprises.  No gimmicks.  No extras.   Fees for 2017 will remain the same as they've been for the last several years at $175.  Registration opens on 07/22/17 (info).

Q?

How Do You Make Money ?

A.

We don't...  It's never been our goal to profit from a PG event.  Since PowersGaming began in 1999, we've donated thousands of dollars of our own money to make these LAN tournaments the most awesome adventure you'll ever have, at an affordable price that will keep you coming back year after year.  Check out some of our testimonials here.

Q?

That’s CRAZY !?! Why Would You Do That ?

A.

We do this for several reasons.  Love and Respect of the Game first and foremost..  Beyond that, we enjoy the competition, but it's also more fun than you can possibly imagine. Nothing like partying with old friends; meeting new ones...  This is our gift to you.

Q?

T-Shirts and Hoodies

A.

Your t-shirt is included in your entry fee; hoodies are something we recently added on a trail basis and are $34/ea.  All shirts are 100% ringspun cotton, heavy duty 6.1oz, double stitched on seams.  One thing we don't do is skimp on shirts.  Same for hoodies.  For the last 10 years we've used Austin Screen Printing (here); great local company.  Back of our 2013 Shirts below:

Q?

Our Internal Servers

A.

The days of "Dedicated" Servers aren't what they used to be, as most games today require leasing an online server.  We still run two boxes however...  The "PG Silver Bullet" (which hosts CS:GO internally): Supermicro Server Mobo running Dual Intel Xeon's with 5 VelociRaptor 500's on an Areca RAID card using 128g registered Corsair.  And our backup server, the "PG Black Mamba": ASUS Server Mobo running Dual Processors with 5 Raptor 150's on an Adaptec RAID card using 64g registered Corsair.

We've also got two l337 Media Servers ("PG Media-1" and "PG Media-2")  that push in-game action across our 65" Samsung TV's in the Sports Bar.  Each Media Server hosts two 1TB SATA 6.0Gb/s drives with 16g G.Skill "X" Series memory.  In-game sound is piped into the Sports Bar through our Yamaha 7.2-Channel AV Receiver and played on 4' tall Klipschorn speakers.  Our 12TB NAS Server ("Nassie") is used for movies/music/videos.

Finally, our homemade router (built using pfSense), guards our network traffic.  With pfSense, we can "load balance" between multiple providers; like Comcast and AT&T for instance.  Or we can grab both a Business and Residential account from the same company and use both pipes at the same time.  We keep an identical second pfSense box for backup.  Finally, each of your computers/tables has 23g Cat6 homeruns from our Planet 24-Port Managed Switches (located in our enclosed server rack).

Q?

Our “Internal” Website

A.

All announcements and patches, as well as map overviews, and software such as Steam, Mumble, HLSW, etc. are available on our "Internal Website", so you won't have to get online to update or download anything.  The internal site automatically pops up on your system when you access the Internet, with all the info you need... Hit the "ESC" key to take you outside to the real world.

Q?

Our External Servers

A.

We used to keep a CS:GO pub or two online, but the way CS:GO plays nowadays this just doesn't make sense.  At the LAN, we typically host at least eight CS:GO practice and tournament servers on our own local dedicated machines; all 128 tick.  Battlegrounds will function the same way.  In the past, we've set up a 64-player Public Server for Friday Night fun.  NFO/Internap/Dallas of course.

Q?

Can I Bring My Own Server, or Switch ?

A.

We do NOT allow you to bring and/or connect your own personal access points, switches, hubs, your own personal server(s), etc. to our network.  This is due to power draw, heat dissipation, and protecting the integrity of our LAN.  There are limited exceptions however regarding personal servers; your machine will need to be setup in the Admin Room where we have plenty of power and close proximity to our switches.  You'll then connect remotely.  Space is limited however; you'll need to contact Jordan via the "Contact" tab above for more details.

Q?

What About In-Game Communication ?

A.

Over the last 19 years, we've tried every form of in-game voice communication known to man.  From Vent to TS to Mumble, we've had them all.  Currently, it is our belief that Discord offers not only the lowest latency and clearest transfer, but it's also a great way to keep abreast of all things PG.  Please join us by using the "Contact" tab above for an invite to our server.

NOTE: You must have a headset with working mic to attend this event, with "push-to-talk" enabled; speakers are NOT allowed, as you'll be in close proximity with other gamers.

Q?

Can I Bring a Video Camera and/or Take Pictures ?

A.

Taking videos or pictures, posting posters or any other spreading of commercial material, propaganda or anything similar is strictly forbidden during our event without special permission from PowersGaming.

PowersGaming retains the legal right to place network cameras for publishing on the Internet, and also to publish photos and/or videos taken inside and/or outside our venue on the Internet, without asking further permission from participants that may be visible in the picture(s) and/or video(s).

PowersGaming retains the legal right to edit, publish, modify and distribute photographs, video and audio recordings taken inside and/or outside our venue on various content delivery channels such as, but not limited to, YouTube and Twitch.TV without asking further permission from persons that may be visible in the video or picture(s).

Q?

What About Parking ?

A.

Parking is directly adjacent to the venue.  Pull into the driveway and use our carpeted 4-wheel dollies to get your gear safely inside through the garage.  Assistants are there to help.  Main driveway is designated for unloading only; please park your car immediately after offloading your gear.

Q?

A Few Words About Your Computers/Monitors/Games

A.

You MUST have the games we're playing installed on your computer BEFORE you arrive at this event.  You may also wish to bring your software with you in case of some emergency (like a reinstall).

Please make sure that your computer is in good working order and ready to frag before you arrive.  Admins will have their hands full making sure that the network is secure, and that all of you can connect to and play on our servers.

We don't have time to rebuild your computers :\

Q?

When/How Can I Register For This LAN ??

A.

RegistrationHeader

You must first qualify for this event by registering (here) on or after Friday 07/22/17.  You'll then receive an email notification regarding admittance.  Sign-Ups begin on 07/28/17 (info).  Payment is due at this time.

For 2017, we're going back to our original method of signups; allowing the 2016 attendees to pick tables first, followed by previous LAN Members, and then the General Public.

PAYMENT / REFUND CRITERIA:

 We know uncontrollable things can come up now and then -- totally understandable.   But don't buy a seat that you're unsure you'll be able to fill, just on the off chance that you'll be able to make it, and then cancel before the event and ask for a refund.

 Based on signups, we place orders for your meals, food items, shirts, beverages, beer and so forth long before the event starts.   More importantly, you'll be picked to play on both a CS:GO and Battlegrounds team; should you cancel, it's difficult to find somebody who can take time off and replace you.   Please Buy Responsibly...

All Package Sales Are Non-Refundable, Including All Cancellations.

 No Cash, Purchase Orders or Checks will be accepted.  You cannot pay at the door.

 American Express/Discover/Visa/MasterCard will be the only forms of payment accepted during Online Signups.  We do NOT accept Paypal.
