Cold ?? Below are a couple of pics that might bear witness to the frigid environment at our events. Top pic is from the '06 LAN. Next to that server is a wall mounted 8,500 BTU AC. Note the temp on that unit. All of the AC's at this event (6 total) are typically running in the low 60's. Next pic is from the '08 LAN. That's
yungryder playing with a comforter wrapped around his entire bod. Third pic shows the wall mounted AC's in the "Texas Room". Each one of those units is 12,000 BTU's.
Why keep it so cold ? Worst thing to have happen at a LAN is for computers to overheat. This is why server rooms are so cold. Really has nothing to do with us trying to keep ppl chilled. And it's a constant battle to stay ahead. I remember one year when some girl turned up our main AC b/c she was cold. By the time we figured out what happened, the temp had risen to the point where we never did catch up.
At the '04 CPL, I was wandering around the BYOC and saw this maintenance guy who told me how they do things at the Gaylord Texan regarding AC's. He wouldn't take me to see the huge chillers they use (security issue) but told me they each were 12 million $$ units, and they had 10 of 'em running to keep the BYOC chilled (2500 computers that year). Pricetag per hour to run those massive units ? $6500

Even at our small event, just four days of cranking the AC's tips the electrical bill up an additional $150.
